Fewer than one-third of the regional population of the Americas now live in countries ranked as Open – a drop of 54% (300 million people) from the previous year.
• Over the last year, 2 countries experienced declines in their freedom of expression, both of which were significant (score drops of 5 points or more): the largest drop was the USA (16 points) moving from Open down into the category Less Restricted; and Argentina (7 points).
• In the last year, only 1 country in the region experienced an advance in expression: Guatemala’s score increased 6 points, continuing its upward trajectory from the previous year.
• Over the last decade, 10 countries in the region experienced declines in their freedom of expression, of which 4 were significant (score drops of 20 points or more): El Salvador (52 points), Nicaragua (30 points), the USA (23 points), and Argentina (20 points).
• Only 4 countries in the region experienced advances in expression over the last decade, none of which were significant.
